Elder Abuse - Lily Dubner

Lily Dubner (68), a new resident, spoke about her abuse. She paid double the approved market rent for a first month occupancy to see whether she liked the location. She paid this exorbitant amount on the understanding that at the end of that month she would receive a regular lease if she wanted it - she had a sort of try before you buy philosophy. She had cancer which needed regular treatment and wanted to live near the treatment center.

Elder Abuse - Cruel and Inhumane Treatment

Sharon LeMire, the Council House bookkeeper, ratified the agreement for a lease in the absence of Audrey F. Dunbar who originated it. However, Dubner made the unforgivable mistake of associating with Pola Doenyas who reads these columns and discusses the content with other residents. Mitchell, on hearing of the association, rescinded the agreement to grant a lease to Dubner and backdated the letter of confirmation.

According to Dubner, both Mitchell and Dunbar threatened her by saying: “the police will get you out” if she did not leave voluntarily by 1:00 pm, 30 September 02, despite having paid rent through midnight. When she objected to leaving early they told her they needed time to clean the room. In fear of arrest, she left at noon with nowhere else to go.

Later that day, a Samaritan found her temporary accommodation. By the good offices of a Seattle attorney she now has a list of places to go for pro bono legal assistance. Attorneys will advise her on alleged violation of her civil rights, loss of housing rights, retaliation for free speech, and discrimination. She has an attorney investigating First Amendment and other complaints against Council House. [Elder Abuse - Abstracts]
